Torch FC Women Fall in First Away Match

Game Summary vs Penn Fusion

With only one game under their belt, the Torch FC women’s team came out against a very decorated Penn Fusion team. The game started off rocky for the Torch as they conceded a goal in the first 7 minutes. However, after a rough start, Torch started to settle into the game and were able to put a few chances on goal for themselves. They showcased success getting up the end line, moving the ball, and were able to attack more consistently as the game went on. The Torch defense held strong throughout the half and were able to weather multiple storms that came from Penn Fusion’s offense. Goalkeeper Mary-Kate Levush came up with countless huge saves for the Torch throughout the first half which allowed the Torch to go into half-time down by only the goal scored in the 7th minute. The second half was a new test for Torch FC as Penn Fusion came out strong. While Penn Fusion maintained the majority of possession and had more chances the second half Torch, again, was able to defend well for much of the second half. Penn Fusion’s final goal came in the last 20 minutes when an unfortunate defensive deflection caused the ball to end up in the back of the net for the last time that night. Madison Martin on the game, “Going into the game we were aware that Penn Fusion was going to be a tough opponent. However, we knew that if we went out there and played the way we knew how that we could put up a fight and I truly believe that we did that. Our young players showed up big and MK (Levush) truly kept us in the game for the entire 90 minutes. I can’t wait to play them again next week and I know that we are all hoping for a better result.”

Head Coach Jason Lollar, “Penn Fusion is always a really difficult test but also a really good opportunity to see where we stack up against some of the best teams in the entire WPSL. Penn Fusion took it to us the first 10-15 minutes of the game and nipped an early goal which was a bit deflating, for sure. We adjusted a few things 15 minutes into the game and had a lot more success in the middle third of the field once we did. In retrospect, we should have made changes earlier in the game and I’d say as a coach, I didn’t set up up for success from the opening whistle so that first goal we conceded was more my fault than anyone else’s, at the end of the day. We got out legs a bit midway through the first half and saw a bit more of the ball in the attacking third but we were just unable to get anything dangerous on goal. Mary-Kate Levush was phenomenal for us in goal and kept us in the game throughout the night. We’re a competitive group and are obviously disappointed in the result but know that next week provides a new opportunity for us to train, push one another, and grow as a group. We’re looking forward to an opportunity to play Penn Fusion again next weekend and my hope is we go into that game full of confidence that we can come away with a result.”

The Torch FC Ladies play again at home on Sunday, June 6 at 3:00 pm.
